On the banks of eventide I was walking along the banks of the evening Many girls were coming and giggling Followed by boys prancing and roaring And the laughter and sadness of venerable men. The grocer was also passing on his way Home. Caressing beautiful women Concealed in his thought. The cherry tree was dreaming and screeching And laughing and striving On the banks of the evening. A distant echo In the wave of the greens Was lapping against evening's Serrated and silent banks. But I forgot to tell you this: Long ago, on the banks of the vespers, I knew not myself - And many girls were coming and giggling Followed by boys prancing and roaring And the laughter and sadness of venerable men.
